The Get Into Resources Story
Late in 2011, when our current Chair’s eldest son was looking at making his subject choices for Year 11, she thought it would be a great idea to take him along to an event which showed him the opportunities available in the resources industry. After finding that there was nothing in Perth that showcased resources industry careers to secondary students, she decided to do something about it.
Getting together with a couple of colleagues and chatting to others who knew of a program for girls which was running in Kalgoorlie at the time, Meryl was put in touch with the Goldfields Education Mining Industry Alliance (GEMIA). Their initial support was very important in establishing the Get Into Resources business model, which still thrives today.
Next, the event needed a venue. Clearly, the location for an event that showcased the resources industry to students should have a mine tour. But where do you find a “mine” in Perth? At North Metropolitan TAFE, of course! The Executive Management of North Metropolitan TAFE were on board with the concept of a resources industry careers event from the start. They have been the backbone of Get Into Resources since its inception and remain so to this day. Our event would not happen without their unwavering support.
Our next challenge was attracting the students and teachers to come along. Generous colleagues connected Get Into Resources with Earth Science Western Australia (ESWA), which supports the teaching of Earth Sciences in schools. ESWA does this by developing classroom teaching and learning resources, providing professional development for teachers, presenting at schools and assisting with field experiences for students. ESWA loved the idea of a resources industry careers event and still co-ordinates schools attendance at Get Into Resources every year.
These three very special organisations are our Founding Partners.
They share the Get Into Resources vision of inspiring a resources industry talent pipeline for the future.
We sincerely thank GEMIA, North Metropolitan TAFE and ESWA for their steadfast support and look forward to many more years in partnership with them.
